Will the world's population of teenage girls be brainwashed by the Twilight series?

It seems that's all people are reading/talking/caring about these days. I, personally, think it's quite stupid. They are the stereotypical books that teen girls love to read- all lovey dovey romance...Will the world's population of teenage girls be brainwashed by the Twilight series?
Will? They already have been, and it's pathetic. Will the world's population of teenage girls be brainwashed by the Twilight series?
I can say that teenage girl population will most definitely be, as you put it, ';brain washed';. The books have become so infinitely popular that if ';You haven't read the twilight series?!? What?!?'; Then you feel the pressure to read them, because everyone else is talking about how 'dreamy' Edward is, and you personally haven't the slightest idea who Edward is, if that makes any sense.

The chain of recommendations to the Twilight series will continue, as it did for, say, Harry Potter. The only difference is that Harry Potter was an intriguing piece of literature, and Twilight (even though I myself enjoy the twilight books to some degree) well, isn't really.

The bottom line is: Yes. The society of teenage girls will, unfortunately, be brainwashed by The Twilight Series.
Yes, some fans can be obsessive about this series but I think that brainwashed is too strong a word. Just because you love something and are passionate about it doesn't mean that you are brainwashed. As a fan, I'll be the first to admit that Meyer's style is very simple and not what you would call challenging, but the author has said herself that she is not a writer, she is a storyteller.

I am intrigued to know whether you yourself have read the books. If you haven't maybe you should give them a try. If you have, then that is fair enough and you are entitled to your opinion but so are we. I don't think that it is fair of you to belittle the fans' intelligence by saying that they have been brainwashed, therefore implying that their love of the books is not of their own volition but has been forced upon them.

You may think that the books are all ';lovey-dovey romance'; and I'm sure many people would agree with you, but the question is, does it matter? Who says that romance is any ';stupider'; than any other genre?

I am sixteen year old teenage girl so I guess I would fit straight into your ';stereotyped category'; but please remember that there is also a website of ';Twilight Mom'; fans who are all over the age of 25. Also a fair mount of male fans. For example, the ';Twilight Guy';.

In regards to your comment about people being obsessed with the character of Edward, I understand that this can be true in some cases. But why does it matter? The fans are not stupid, they understand the difference between reality and fiction. Twilight may not be realistic but many books are not. In fact, think that the world of literature would be very boring if every book was realistic. Twilight is pure escapism. The fans know that.

I am not disputing that you are entitled to you opinion but perhaps a more structured and thought out question would have been appropriate as opposed to the slightly offensive one posted.

I'm sorry if this reply seems a little harsh but I for one am fed up of my intelligence getting judged based on what books I read.
Not permanently. I hope.

It does worry me a bit because Edward is an emotionally manipulative, controlling stalker and here we've got all these young, impressionable teenagers idolizing him...

But then it occurs to me that I read about a lot of real jerkwads in books I thought were romantic as a teenager, too, and I turned out fine. I think the teenagers who read Twilight and continue reading other books (and who have adults in healthy relationships to look up to as models, which I certainly did) will turn out fine, and the ones who don't and who don't have good models in their real lives would have had screwed up relationships anyway. ~shrugs~
I feel like they already ARE brainwashed.

Fortunately, most of them will grow up, have actual life experiences, and realize that even though ';Twilight'; is a fun pleasure read, it has nothing in common with real relationships.

As a 24-year-old who (guiltily) read the series, I can honestly say I would have loved them when I was 13 or 14. But a couple of years will give the ';Twihards'; a very different perspective on the books.
It's a book with no literary value whatsoever. It's biggest fans tend to be fangirls who are in love with Edward because they think he's sexy (despite the fact that he is merely a word).

There's no character development at all, and the protagonist, Bella Swan, would die without Edward, which leaves some of us to believe that she may, in fact, be a zombie due to the fact that she probably died sometime before the story even took place (thanks to her knack for falling in front of cars and other bullshit). Bella is nothing but a sniveling girl who takes advantage of some people, and then grovels at the feet of others. Edward is obviously a vampire thirsty for, ironically, Bella's blood, and at the same time he is abstinent from drinking from humans. In all sense Edward should draw himself away from such a 'dangerous'individual-- that or eat her. Many people fail to notice that the characters circulating around the main pair, such as Alice, Jasper, Jacob, and the rest of the crew are a lot more interesting, and less involved in cliche lives to match those of the main characters.

This book is so bad that I actually couldn't stomach to read it.

The majority of the book is dialogue and lacks any use of literary devices and/or elements that truly make a story. With little to no description and two-dimensional characters that are the very definitions of ';Mary-sue'; and ';Gary-stu,'; this story belongs on fanfiction.net, not in bookstores.

She (Stephenie Meyer) can't go five minutes without talking about how gorgeous Edward is, and it's clear she's living out some sick, fangirl fantasy and getting money off of it.

It's popularity is only based on the fact that Edward Cullen is supposedly ';godly'; and the sexiest man alive. He's fictional and practically grey colored. Get over it.

Bella is stupid. She's whiney and clingy, like most Mary-sues. Edward is has no personality. He needs to just bite the stupid girl already and get on with his sparkly-suicidal-vampire life.

Love stories are great, this however, is garbage. The way they fall in love is stupid and shallow and based on looks and lust alone. What kind of message is that?

It's trash. Pure trash.

';Before you, Bella, my life was like an R rated movie. Very dark, but there were always women- some fat and some skinny but they were all too strong. And then you shot across my lap like a pornstar. Suddenly I was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was passion. When you were gone, when you disobeyed me, everything went black. I became angry, but my eyes were blinded by the smell of your blood. I couldn't see the whores anymore. And there was no more reason for me to let you do anything for yourself.'';

a quote from twilight that has been edited so you don't get brainwashed.
I love the Twilight series but i try not to let it overule my life, i am a bit of a bookworm and tbh i'll read almost anything because thats what mosts books do.. they catch the attention of the reader and suck the readers into their story. I have to admit Stephanie Meyer is an awesome author to write a series like that. Im currently writing my own story as i love to write and let my imagination run wild. I also dont necessarily like lovey - dovey books i also like fantasy and adventure books.
Not all of them. I love Twilight, but I know some girls who can't stand it. Like with Harry Potter, either you hate it or you love it. I think Twilight has the effect it does on people because it's a way for girls to lose themselves in their fantasy; falling in love with the PERFECT guy. And having him love you, too, of course. Just a theory. :)
No, there is still some sense in some of 'em.

Twilight sucks. My brother could write better (he's 7).

My friends and I are planning to see the movie wearing large, ';Twilight sucks'; T-shirts for the fun of it.

And vampires shouldn't sparkle. It's just sick and wrong.
just because a woman wrote an extremely successful novel series doesn't mean that girls are getting ';brainwashed'; by it.... instead of bashing the series, people should be happy that teens are actually reading... they could be doing worse things than reading a ';lovey-dovey'; book

%26lt;3 tori
I have good reason for liking it, and understand it's flaws.

I'm not brainwashed.

Those with pettier minds? They totally lose it. And it's annoying. But I don't think people should get mad at the people that like it. Because that's pathetic.
Yes, they will. They will also spam half the websites you like to be on because its the only book they have ever read. The books were good compared to what else is on the shelves right now, but crap. GROW UP AND GET A REAL BOYFRIEND.
Yea its sad. It kind of reminds of the Oprah Book Club Zombies. Think for yourself people!

However if you actually like this book because you chose to, thats fine. If you like it because other people like it...well you know the deal
Have you ever read them?

Im just thinking how can you judge if you have never read them, who knows you could really like them.

And if you have read them then you should understand y teenage girls love them.
Twilight is almost exactly like Romeo and Juliet. Except Romeo wasn't a vampire. And if you don't like them don't read them. Common sense people.
Yes, it will brainwash them all.

But not me.

I'm 14, and not obsessed.

I've read all of the books.
No more so than by any of the other books, tv shows or movies.
I personally like the books.

Honestly I wish Stephanie Meyer would just go away and write something that won't make all these girls crazy
i thought it was stupid until i read it...
You know what's a book teenage girls will be brainwashed by?

THE CLIQUE SERIES

It is about a psychotic 13 year old who rules her school by calling everyone ';LBRs';

Twilight has more than just romance. It has humor, action, mystery and all that fantasy stuff, people like.

Its kinda like the Inkheart books except waaaaaay better. FYI, girls obsess over edward because he's a mysterious character and girls fall for him because when they read it, they feel the character. Its all in the writing.

So do us Twilight Fans a favor and grow up. Twilight is something people read for fun. So get over it. Loser.
that's your opinions .. but other people have reasons for liking the book
